Team Chat Notifications and the iPhone App
For Admin, Office admin, Instructor, Student
Team Chat lets you know about new messages in three ways: alerts in the web app, emails for direct messages when your school turns them on, and notifications on your iPhone. This article covers all three, plus how to use Team Chat in the iOS app.
In the web app
- A dot next to Team Chat in the sidebar, and next to each channel, means there's something unread.
- When someone sends you a direct message while you're somewhere else in Sky Schedule, a small pop-up shows who it's from and the first line.
- Sounds are off until you turn them on.
Turn on sounds
- Open Team Chat.
- Click the gear next to Workspace at the top of the Team Chat sidebar. General Settings opens.
- Turn on Notification sounds and pick a sound from the list. Each one plays when you pick it.
Sounds play for new messages from other people. Your choice is saved to your account.
Email for direct messages
An admin can turn on Team Chat emails in Settings > Email. When it's on, every direct message also emails the person who receives it, so nobody misses a message from the front desk. Channel messages don't send email. See Choose Which Emails Your School Sends.
On iPhone
Team Chat is in the Sky Schedule iOS app. See Get the Sky Schedule iOS App to install it.
- Tap the menu button and choose Team Chat. A number next to it shows how many unread messages you have.
- The current channel's name is at the top. Tap it to switch. The list shows Channels and Direct messages, and you can search channels or people.
- Type in the message box and tap send. Tap + to add a Photo or a GIF.
- Type @ to mention someone, or @everyone in a channel. Admins and instructors can also mention Arlo.
To start something new from the channel list:
- Tap New message under Direct messages and pick a person.
- Tap New channel under Channels, enter a Channel name, pick people, and tap Create.
Touch and hold a message to Reply in thread or Add reaction, or to Edit or Delete your own. Replies open in a Thread sheet. Tap Load earlier messages at the top to scroll back.
iPhone notifications
- While the app is open, it notifies you about new messages in channels and conversations you can see, unless you're already looking at that channel.
- When Team Chat emails is on, a direct message also arrives as a push notification, because the app sends a notification for each email Sky Schedule sends you.
- Allow notifications when the app asks. You can change this later in your iPhone's Settings app under Sky Schedule.
Troubleshooting
- No sound in the web app. Turn on Notification sounds, and click anywhere in Sky Schedule once after loading the page so your browser allows audio.
- No iPhone notifications. Check that notifications are allowed for Sky Schedule in the iPhone Settings app, and that you're signed in to the right school.
- People aren't getting emails for direct messages. An admin needs to turn on Team Chat emails in Settings > Email.
