Log a Lesson and Grade Steps
For Admin, Instructor
After each lesson, the instructor logs it against the student's syllabus: which lesson it was, how each step went, a short summary, and a signature. The entry goes into the student's training log and moves their progress forward.
Before you start
The student needs to be enrolled in a program. See Enroll a Student in a Training Program.
Open the Log lesson window
You can get there two ways:
- From the flight: in Settings > Scheduling, set Log lesson to After completing. Then completing a flight for an enrolled student opens Log lesson right away, with the flight attached. If your school has Before completing, it opens first instead, and Complete Flight follows.
- From Training: open Training, click the student's row on the Overview tab, and click Log Lesson.
Log the lesson
- Check the Date and Aircraft.
- Under Completed flight, pick the flight this lesson goes with. Choose Not applicable for a lesson with no flight.
- Set the Lesson outcome: Pass or Fail.
- Pick the Lesson from the syllabus. Sky Schedule suggests the next one not yet logged. Lessons already logged show Logged in front of their name.
- Grade every step in the lesson. Depending on how the program was set up, each step gets a score from 1 to 5 or Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory. Add a Note… to any step that needs one.
- Write the Summary: what you covered, how it went, and what's next.
- Under Certification & instructor signature, draw your signature.
- Click Save & Sign.
The entry appears in the student's training log and their progress bar updates.
Save a draft
Not finished? Click Save draft. The entry shows in the training log with a Draft badge. Click Continue Draft to finish grading and sign it later.
Mark the program complete
When the student finishes the program, pick Graduation (program complete) as the Lesson. Signing it records the final lesson, marks the enrollment Graduated, and sets progress to 100%.
What happens after you sign
- If Customer signs training logs is on in Settings > Scheduling, the student is asked to countersign. See Collect Student Signatures on Lesson Logs.
- If Customer training log emails is on in Settings > Email, the student gets a copy by email. Parent training log emails also sends one to the parent on file.
Tips
- Log the lesson right after the debrief, while the details are fresh. The flight-attached flow makes that one click.
- Use step notes for specifics, like "Needed prompting on carb heat," and keep the summary for the big picture.
Troubleshooting
- "Grade each step." Every step needs a score or a Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory mark before you can save.
- "Add a summary." Write a short summary of the lesson.
- "Instructor signature required." Draw your signature in the box, then save again.
- Log lesson didn't open after completing a flight. Check that Log lesson isn't set to Off, and that the customer is enrolled in a program.
